A brotherhood is a cluster of grapes: when you squeeze them they become one juice.
The unripe and the ripe are in opposition, but when the immature ripens, too, it becomes a friend.
The hearty unripe grapes, destined for ripening,
will at last become one in heart by the breath of the masters of heart.
They grow rapidly to grapehood, shedding duality and hatred and strife.
Then in maturity, they rend their skins, till they become one.

Rumi Mathnawi II: 3717-19, 3723

The Caravan

Oh lovers, lovers, it is time
to set out from the world.
The drum of celestial distances
sounds in my soul’s ear.

The camel driver is at work
and has prepared the caravan.
He asks that we forgive him
For the disturbance he has caused us,
but why are we travellers asleep?

Everywhere the murmur of departure
thrust at us from behind blue veils,
and as if to make the invisible more plain,
a wondrous people has come forth.

Beneath this water-wheel of stars
your sleep has been heavy.
Observe that heaviness and beware,
for life is fragile and quick.
Heart, aim yourself at love!
Friend, discover the Friend

About

David Bellak Dede was trained and appointed as a Sufi guide by Suleyman Hayati Dede, the last Mevlevi Shaikh of Konya, who passed away in 1985.

"Nobody can stop time; we must accept that. The universe turns and the days fall, one after the other, and they turn, too. We don’t feel that there is enough time to accomplish all of the things that we want to accomplish, but we must benefit from all the time that we do have and make that time very valuable … enjoy every moment. Make the most of each moment in each day."  Suleyman Dede
